Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana is a financial inclusion program of the government of India. Open to Indian citizens, that aims to expand affordable access to financial services. Like, bank accounts, remittances, credit, insurance and pensions.

Pradhan Mantri Yojana is the biggest financial inclusion initiative in the world was announced by the hon'ble Pradhan Mantri Shree Narendra Modi on 15th August 2014 from the ramparts of the Red Fort and launched by him on 28th August 2014 across the country. While launching Jan Dhan Yojana, The Prime Minister had described the occasion as a festival to celebrate the liberation of the poor from a vicious cycle.

Pradhan Mantri had reffered to the ancient sanskrit verse: Sukhasya Moolam Dharma Dharmasya Moolam Artha Arthasya Moolam Rajyam - Which put the onus in the state to involve people in economic activity.

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana is a national mission on financial inclusion which has an integrated approach to bring about comprehensive financial inclusion and provide banking services to all households in the country. The scheme ensures access to a range of financial services like availability of basic savings bank account, access to need based credit, remittances facility, insurance and pension.

Accounts opened under (PMJDY) are being opened with zero balance. It can be opened in any bank branch or business correspondent outlet.

An account can be opened by presenting an officially valid documents i.e, the passport, the driving licence, the permanent account number. However, if the account holder wishes to get cheque book, he/she will have to fulfill minimum balance criteria.

  2. Accidental insurance cover of Rs. 2 lakh.
  3. No minimum balance required.
  4. The scheme provide life cover of Rs. 30000 payable on death of the beneficial, subject to fulfillment of the eligibility condition.
  5. Easy transfer of money across India.
  6. Beneficiaries of government schemes will get direct benefit transfer in these accounts.
  7. After satisfactory operation of the account of 6 months an overdraft facility will be permitted.
  8. Access to pension, insurance products.
  9. The claim under personal accidental insurance under PMJDY
  10. Shall be payable if the Rupay Card holder have performed minimum one successful financial or non-financial customer induced transaction at any bank branch, Bank Mitra, ATM, POS, E-Commerce etc.
  11. Overdraft facility up-to 10000 is available in only one account per household preferably lady of the household.

Required Documents For Jan Dhan Khata

  • To make KYC easy and account can be opened by providing any of the blow documents are : 
  • Passport
  • Driving licence 
  • Pancard
  • Aadhaar card
  • Voter's identity card
  • Job car issued by NREGA signed by an officer of the  state government.

If you do not have any valid document, you can still opened a small account with the bank by submitting a self attested photo and signing and giving thumb print in presence of a bank official.

To open a basic saving bank deposit account (BSBDA) with zero balance under PMJDY, you need to fulfill the below condition:

  • Be a citizen of India
  • Age 10 year above
  • Do not have bank account

  • One basic saving bank account is opened for unbanked person.
  • There is no requirement to maintain any minimum balance in pmjdy accounts.
  • Interests is earned on the deposit in pmjdy accounts.
  • Rupay debit card is provided to pmjdy account holder.
  • Accident insurance cover of Rs. 1 lakh (enhanced to Rs. 2 lakh to new pmjdy accounts opened after 28.8.2018)
  • Life insurance cover of Rs. 30,000 to eligible pmjdy accounts holder who opened Their account for the first time between 15.8.2014 to 31.1.2015 is available.
  • An overdraft (OD) facility upto Rs 10,000 to eligible account holders is available.
  • Pmjdy accounts are eligible for direct benefit transfer (DBT), pradhan mantri jeevan jyoti bima Yojana.
